          -Stranger things-
                 Applying Todorov's Narrative Theory

Following Todorov's narrative theory the state of equilibrium within the opening scene of (season 1, episode 1), "stranger things" appears to be a familiar setting where a group of youthful boys gather to play a board game. The scene also demonstrates the 80's family dynamic with the mother stereotypically performing unpaid domestic work; the father playing  his role as "a man" (the breadwinner of the family unit), doing the DIY work. The equilibrium portrays this idea of a happy family life - with of course a few arguments. Overall  the characters are relatable for the audience so we can grow an attachment; interest to their stories. In terms of MISE-EN-SCNE the characters clothing and hairstyles are fitting towards the time period; there is a use of high key lighting within the fist half of the episode suggests a sense of warmth.

However turmoil is created as the narrative shifts and so does the lighting. The audience are now transported with (Will) outside of the house setting and low key lighting further demonstrates this vulnerable, uncertain setting. In addition our emotions are continuously being spiked up and down (just like Kurt Vonnegut puts forward with his curves on shapes of stories) as tension rises and drops again. The false sense of security that we get when (Will) grabs a half of a gun in a later scene, leaves us in shock for his later capture. Its certain that there is a disruption in equilibrium and this comforting feeling of youthful boys playing a board game together has now vanished into this frightening experience. All of this is supported by the shift of  music, through which the upbeat pop of the 80's that played at the beginning has moved to an unsettling creepy tone, which now appears to be the state of new equilibrium.

-Task 1-

-feature film = Jumanji

The mise-en-scne that we notice is the use of time period props such as 1800's costume to illustrate the year the film is set in. furthermore the long shot of kids chasing each other on bikes down a narrow road further emphasises this idea. The genre conventions of a typical children/teen film with varied music; high key lighting fitting accordingly to emotions provides a simple to follow narrative.

The plot at first is Spencer a stereotypical  nerd is going through a period where him and his former close friend are drifting apart. His goal is to do another students homework, and this student (Fridge) is avoiding another conflicting issue, which is getting kicked off the school sports team due to his lack of work. In additions we are introduced to Bethany who has boy drama; Martha an aspiring graduate (this seems to be the state of equilibrium for our characters).

Until there is a disruption to this equilibrium and our characters are placed in an un-familiar situation finding themselves serving detention in a school basement; being placed all together in one group. Its evident that there personalities differ which makes for a great dynamic to kick start rising conflict. Moreover things worsen as tension spikes and they are transported inside the game (Jumanji). Here the characters compete for survival raising the odds of fear with some comedic aspects intertwined within the growing action.

As the single strand narrative commences the group recognise the disruption to the equilibrium and attempt to resolve it by forming a plan to return the jewel to the jaguar shrine. This allows the narrative to return to a new state of equilibrium (as they are back to the real world but as better individuals).

This new equilibrium as suggested through Todorov's narrative theory - is of present-day romances and friendships within the group. The characters have undergone a transformational arc developing a more mature attitude which is less self-absorbed. Each of these characters have learned moral lessons  (being less fearful, not being self-absorbed, understanding a balance of work and fun time and finally just being a overall better person subverting from stereotypical laddish behaviour).

-long form tv show = Friends

Season 6 Episode 9 -

The episodes focus is on the warm hearted festive holiday "thanksgiving" where our characters are seated on a round table suggesting unity, which is further emphasised by the stylistic choice of high key lighting. Moreover the time period (20's) is presented though Monica's clothing - bright orange flowy bottoms; up done hairstyle along with Chandlers simplistic jumper all hinting at the typical fashion within that era. We also get hints at the begging of the episode were there is a close up of a dated video game the boys are playing, not to mention the technology used such as an older television; game consul .

At the begging the equilibrium is portrayed to be a young couple having a disagreement, this tension is exhibited in the camera movements with quick cuts back and forth. Then our credits role in introducing the cast with use of a non-diegetic upbeat theme song and the couples conversation at the beginning pushes the narrative though into the next scene. The normality seems to be a relaxed group of friends who live close together experiencing new events, and the audience are taken on this journey with them.

Later on our characters are sharing a meal together; the disequilibrium is Monica's parents are coming round however she hasn't told her parents that she is in a relationship with Chandler. We learn this is an dilemma as her parents dislike Chandler.  This becomes our catalyst for the rest of the episode to progress  enticing our audience to watch more. Furthermore the arrangement of an upbeat guitar soundtrack set's the joyful mood which is essential as the underlying genre is comedy. As the episode continues there are multiple strands of narrative throughout that drive the episode along. Touching upon character arc's within the episode, its apparent that there is not one leading character in "Friends" but rather each person within the friendship group gets there own moment to shine. The episode itself relates to Kurt Vonnegut's theory of this up and down scale of emotions, with a eventual plummet in happiness where everyone is arguing. But again this rises and our characters move from what started off as a bad argument to, gradually becoming happy as the episode concludes.

Joey and Ross being invited to another party which is also a ongoing storyline along with the dispute of Ross smoking weed in college. Throughout most of the scenes there are medium shots with some incorporation of close ups to really capture an emphasise facial expressions. Overall we are returned to this idea of Rachel and her making dessert which was foreshadowed within the fast half of the episode, and food almost being bought in as a way to push forward the plot. At the end our new equilibrium is one where everyone is yelling at each other; medium camera shots remain the same, with minimal use of full shots during the duration of the episode. As the credits roll in it comes across that all discord is reconciled. This is represented in a full body shot of Monica hugging her parents and the rest of the characters gathered around. The credits roll in at the end in the same style as the opening credit along with the musical theme song all intertwined providing a sense of familiarity that the audience adore so much.

-short term tv show = Shawn the sheep

Series 1 Episode 1 -

We are introduced to this animated world with a truck driver and sheep; the setting is based in the country side farm. To begin with the narrative is fixated on a cabbage and the sheep interacting with it. We come to terms with the sense of normality for these animals on the farm as they huddle around together playing around with peculiar objects. What further suggest that the animals are central to the plot is the dog who is dressed in a hat and sports wear - this initially seems odd but we come to learn that this is how things function within there world.  In terms of Todorov's narrative structure there is soon is a disruption to our state of equilibrium ( a sate of disequilibrium), as one of the sheep kick the vegetable into the farmers house window shattering it. The camera remains still in a mid shot capturing the animals stunned facial expressions, and conflict rises as a recognition to this disruption causes the audience to think about how they would resolve there dilemma.  More mischief between the animals leaves us pondering what other situations these characters will get into and how they would be able to get out of trouble yet again. At the end of the episode the narrative almost follows a cyclical structure with the farmer returning in his truck. The episode concludes with the dog having a pumpkin stuck on his head, which is similar to how the cabbage flew out in the begging of the episode. This is our new equilibrium, as the episode ends with a close up of the sheep once again.

-The Apartment-
                 TASK 2

The state of equilibrium is C.C.Baxter a clerk in an insurance company, who lends his apartment out for other men's affairs. However there is a disruption to his arrangement once his boss finds out of his plans, causing an obstacle. Baxter's boss negotiates a deal proposing to use the apartment for his personal immoral use. The issue is that the young women in which his boss is perusing an interest in, is also the women that C.C.Baxter ends up falling madly in love with. Following Todorov's narrative structure there is a further disequilibrium as the young girl attempt suicide in his apartment. This rise in climax causes our character to attempt to repair the damage. Lastly a new equilibrium is reached and our protagonist gets the girl of his dreams and is freed from his job that was encapsulating his within a toxic society of upper class men.

Our story leads in a three act structure, with act 1 setting up this idea of the apartment being used for affairs leading to act 2 with the girls attempt of suicide and finally act 3 where the protagonist gets the girl. Finally referring to Kurt Vonnegut's theory on the shapes of stories - its noticeable that this film begins somewhat in the middle on a classic day for C.C.Baxter and then catapults down the curve right to the bottom. Here our characters learn valuable lessons in order to "get themselves out of the hole" and reach the top of the curve.

Die Hard -

This particular film can also be broken down into the 3 act narrative, as our main character firstly goes from safty to danger. Later being beaten and finally into revenge; lastly victory. In the beggning of the film our characters equalibrium is established. The protagansist is a detective, with a wife named Holly; we are even introudced to some of his co-workers. We are then further swept in by some rising action scenes, and more opposition that causes disequalibrium. When finding himslef in the middle of a terriorist takeover our protaganist (John) takes on the role of a superhero figure.

In addition the narrative also brings elements of romance, as John is still married to Holly even though they are actually separated and living long distance. John tries to reconsile his situation with Holly, and makes a visit to her and the kids where further drama is sturred up. Again there is more increacing action as John later has to escape from a shootout. After recognising the disruption to the disequalibrium he attempts to repair it. John becomes the lone force opposiition aganist the gang of terroirst. The turning point cataylst is John manging to kill his first terroist, and as the film progresses John learns further resilance through difficults times. This is especially shown at the time when he had to drag his serveerly bleeding feet to the bathroom to get the glass out. However all comes to a end with a new equalibrium, were the terroirst are dead; John and Holly reconsille.

-Genre-

Task 3

This particular image  of wonder women within a fight scence illistrates the hybrid genra of action/war/adventure/superhero aspect. The screen grap here higlights the key props wonder women uses such as (a sheild and sord). This allows the audience to link typical elements and releate it back to some of the genra conventions of a superhero film. The film also breaks some of the genra conventions as our protagaonist is a strong female character. Steryotipical war/action genras tend to have males play the dominat figure and women as the love intrest.

The genra is comunicated through framing and composition. Here our protaganist is featured in a low angle shot where she is framed at the forront of the shot, with our second character bending down slightly below her. This allows wonder women to be the centure of attention tieying in with the genra conventions purpose for a superhero film. Not to mention a low angle shot protrays her as a dominant,  figure. Moreover iconography of wonder womens gold plated head pice represents a aspect of being superioir.

The image represents how conventions of scenrioes/colour and lighting shows the genra of a film. In particular, the film shares parallels to Captin America: The first avenger with a brightly coloured hero in the midpoint of a grey battlefield. Again the idea that a female figure is within a menacing battle fild breaks the conventions of the superhero genra.

-jumanji-

For a action film there is a genra convention of having a typical setting being in great landscapes. In this image Franklin (Kevin Hart) is being chased by a stampead of rihnoes in a massive cave revealed throgub numerous long shots.

In addition scenarios such as being chased and fighting for survival are expected in action films. But Franklin also adds a comedic element to this hightened expirecen throguh his halrious facial expressions exibited in close up's in the scene.

Furthermore this scene is edited to cut between diffrent perspectives of our protagonist being chased to really give a sense of this intense action from alternating angles. This makes the audience feel more apart of the rising action.

-relaistic graphics animals edited to stamped character

random movment for rush of running

The framing and composition of the characters feeds into the gera conventions of having a strong male be the forefront of a shot in a action film. Here its evident that the muscular man takes centre of attention. By being positoned at the front, the other protgansits almost seem as backup. MISE-EN-SENE elements like clothing also comes into play with our female protagnist being dressed in what could be seen as revealing. In many action films (for example Wonder Women) females are dressed in tight revealing clothing even during battle scenes.

In the matter of breaking genra conventions, its unsal for a film to use a tiny framed character Franklin - to be portrayed in action scenes.

The action genre is apparent through not only the protagonists momvments but also key props. The motercycle demonstrates this fast, thrilling buzz that adds to the rising climax.

However breaking conventions of action films the protagnists strengths are karate among other powerful skills. Whereas men such as Franklin posses many highlited weaknesses including this very comedic detail of (being afraid of cake).

-Representation-

  • How much do each of the products rely on stereotypes?

The apartment uses the stereotypes of men being a dominant figure over women. Furthermore the Apartment suggest that women are viewed as sexualised “objects” who are not meant to challenge the hierarchy. In addition the stereotype of women playing the “damsel in distress” is heavily expressed throughout the film.  In comparisoon the hit series "friends" also conforms to steryotypes - this is shown in the character (Rachel Green) who is snobby, emotional and sensative. In addition to Rachels character reflecting steryotpyical behaviour for women, she also embodys steryotyles around physical apparence. Rachel is blond;skinny refelcting the American standard of beauty.

  • How have the representations changed over time? (between 1960 and the date of your products release?)

Representations of ethnicity have predominantly from the 1960 to the dates of my products release remaind the same. This is executed in "Friends"  with Rosses romanic relationships being mainly with women of a particular ehtnicity rather than him dating women of all races. Again in "The Apartment" the main ethnicity of the 1960's is white without any diversity.

  • Do your products show a balanced range of characters?

In the apartment there tends to be more male characters playing strong lead roles in comparison to that of women. Now although characters themselves have varied ages there is a lack of consideration around religion, ethnicity, disability and more. Following onto this "Friends" also follows a pattern  having  limited ehtnicitys feature on screen.  Its been recorded that (Aisha Tyler) was the only recurring black character on "Friends". In spite of that "Friends" can be apllouded for the portrayl of gay marridge in a postive and functonal light when it comes down to Ross and his ex-wife.

  • Do your products represent particular groups in a more positive or negative way?

The Apartment represents the “bourgeoisie” men in a negative light. It demonstrates how capitalist values alter a person to becoming a nasty unlikable figure who in the end would be left desolated. Men in genral are exibited negativily with their controlling mannerism; close minded perpectives. Besides this women could aslo arguably be percived as weak, dull-witted individuals. "Friends" approch to representation of particular groups such as those of the LGBT community seem to shed a postive light.

-Class-

Which class do the characters from The Apartment belong to?

The characters within the apartment mainly fit into the middle class catogory with a social grade ranging from (c1-b). However the bourgiouse's exibited in the film such as (Jeff D. Sheldrake) seems to be in the (A) catogory.

How can you tell?

The social calss of the characters where distingishable via their income and occupations. Due to the fact that the film heavily focuses on occupation we are able to view each character either upscaling there position through promotions; how the "big boss" choices to spend his lesure time. Its evident that those of the bourgoiuse catogory have lavish lifestyles as protrayed by (Jeff D.); his chrsitmas cards along with his ability to cover up numerous affairs.

How is class represented in one of your chosen products?

In Friends the eminent class represented is the middle class. the individulas within this class are exibited as having pretty good jobs, where they still face struggles that can damage their socioeconomic status. Despite this In spite of this Monica's character could be contemplated to be lower middle class becouse in season 2 where she was fired from her job and becoming the sole "breadwinner" when chandler quits his occupation in season 9. This example shows that althoughh Friends was presumingly depiciting the middle class it does sometimes fail to do so accuratly.

Representation at the                                    Oscars

2013 - the controvery srounding this year higlights the backward apprch to the filmaking industry. During this event the "we saw your boobs" song was played whilst guys commented on women within the audience whos breast where visable. As expected this was problematic due to the fact that these women where being spotlighted for their physical apparence rather than the talent and hardwork they indvested into the movies. I feel that to demonstrate more equality and represtntation in the film industry both women and men should be reviewed based on there talent rather than segragating diffrent questions and comments according to your gender.

Gender: The Bechdel Test

What were the differences in results?

In the Apartment scene the two women are discussing the bosses mischivious, devlish matters, once again proving that when women are left to talk bythemselves they fail to pass the bechdel test. However comparring this to the hit series friends the sene tends to focus on the frienship between (Rachel, Monica and Phobe) as oppoise to a discution about men.

Why do you think the results have changed?

One reason for the results indicating a change is the rise in feminist values and campaigns for a more equal society. As time has aged more influential speakers both women and men have taken moves to establish gender representations in the media industry, and propel their views into society.

Do you think the Apartment could be classified as misogynistic?

The Apartment could be calssifed as misogynistic due to the fact that womens are portrayed as "obbjects" who should conform to society's expectations in the 1960's. Furthermore it pushes the idea that women should stay silent and obey the men who are dominant over them.

practical task

You are now going to critique your script from Unit 2 based on these three categories: Genre, Narrative and Representation.

Pertaining to my script "Mother-figure" I put forward that parts of my narrative are lengthy, which could disengage indivudiulas upon being read. I also think that the script's genre of drama could be improved upon. This is due to the fact that although the  dioulgouge succsfully expresses conflict and emotion which aids to build into a distruption of equalibrium as outlined by Todrov's theory- my script is short of action.  Moreover discutions on representation, I understand that my script is mainly fouced on a leading protagnaist and a few side characters that help move the narrative along therfore their is no need to delve into characters apparence and religion etc. For this resoning i think that in terms of representation my script fails to cover many groups, but this is mostly down to the fact that the stroy is centured on one individulal.

  1. How does your script conform to the three act structure? In the opening of the script we have the set up whereby the protaganist lifestyle and rountuine are being portrayed. As we delve deeper e get a sense of what this character is like and waht potentially could cause a rise in climax latewr on. This progresses to the second act where the script bulds on asending action of harsh diolouge; troiublesome memoeries. during act 2 our protagsnist is faced with obstacales which are represented to us through a series of flashbackes. Soon the setting is changed and our mentally distrubed protagnist reaches the final act. Here in act 3 the script takes a more decending approch to the action and establishes the new equalibrium with (Talah) returing home from the mental instiute.

  2. What is the established equilibrium and how is this disrupted? the established equalibrium is our character within there household follwoing there carfually constructed morning rountine. This home setting paired witht he characters cosy clothing gives a sense of familiarity. However the distrubption in the equalibrium is the shift of setting. the readers are taken from this familliar home setting to a mental instritude were things are cold and bleck.

  3. How do you represent different groups within your script? Do you think any aspect of your representation could be improved? in terms of representation i illustrate the younger audience to be chaotic and depressed. The negative light on young teens feeds into the idea of a generation where mental health is deteriorating I do believe that this representation could be improved as it again paints younger people to be out of control which is not the case for many. In addition to the representation of age within my script, I want to address my portrayal of the "English teacher". In the script the teacher is a "middle aged man" which is the typical age for teachers. However i fail to bring into account how there is more of a movement for younger teachers within a school setting, and instead i follow what most movies present teachers to look like. The description of the teacher is prototypical; could be an area of improvement for my script.

Feasibility of my script = 8/10

due to location problems such as the mental institute. But home setting and park are two locations which are practical for filming.

Narrative

Does your film adhere to the Todorov narrative cycle?

Following Todorov’s narrative cycle the film begins at a point of equilibrium with the protagonist (Taalah) carrying out her morning routine. During this visual a voice over is slowly integrated a few seconds after. The voice over pushes the narrative through and portrays this depressing idea of "teen love". The disruption to this equilibrium is represented via the heightening of music in the background. The recognition to this disruption is presented by a (dissolve to black) effect; then a transition to a POV shot from inside the fridge. An attempt to fall back to a state of equilibrium is illustrated as the viewers are again transported with the visual of (Taalahs) morning routine. This provides a sense of familiarity as the cinematography of the clip is mirrored to the first half of the film. Continuing on Todorov's cycle, it’s clear that the protagonist reaches a new equilibrium - which is illustrated in the editing style (with a shift to a "cool blue" temperature for the colour). Our characters new equilibrium is a destructive turn to (self-harm) as a coping mechanism. As a result, the film does adhere to Todorov’s narrative cycle in order to full engross viewers.

Which event in the film is the ‘turning point’ - how well do you think this moment demonstrates the change from equilibrium to disequilibrium?

The "turning point" within the film is where the protagonist’s bloody wrist is deviously revealed. The moment demonstrates how (Taalah) now faces a stage of disequilibrium as she turns to an unhealthy coping mechanism. In this instant the clip successfully narrows the audiences view to the primary colour (red) as an indication of danger, fear; an unsettling feeling. All justifying a key moment of disequilibrium.

Does your film include any elements of conflict resolution?

The film highlights points of conflict, as the characters obsessive behaviour seems to encapsulate them in a lifestyle destressing to live in. In addition, with our protagonist working through a mental battle- it also becomes apparent towards the end that these struggles are physically affecting her to. However, the film has no conflict resolution as matters seem to progressively worsen rather than resolve in the short snippet from the script we followed. Nevertheless, in the script as a whole there is elements of conflict resolution as (Taalah) comes to grips with her new equilibrium. Becoming an individual who has experience’s learning curves; may be willing to gain life lessons to better benefit her future.

Representation

Identify a group that your film represents (i.e., gender, age, religion, etc.)

The film (Mother-Figure) is representative of a ‘teen coming of age’ from a female’s perspective with an outlook into her depression.

Does your film adhere to the stereotypes already perpetuated by the media?

Stereotypes surrounding the depiction of teenagers and mental illness within the media industry tend to follow a pattern of presenting those with mental health as violent individuals. According to an article studying the representation of mental illness in film it highlights how common it is for films to inaccurately show mental illness through using a violent figure, acting out with rebellious actions to put forward their message. Whereas our film illustrates a character who could be seen as enigmatic, and one way this is done is by purposely not revealing her face. Along with this our film takes a more slow-paced narrative paired with no dialogue from the character herself, which allows us to further avoid misleading stereotypes surrounding someone dealing with mental health. The media also perpetuates figures who play the “dehumanized crazy person”, whereas our film places emphasis on the protagonist’s inner struggles instead of crowding her world with characters who react to her discorded behaviour. Or propel the ideology that the protagonist is a “crazy person”.

Looking back to the Apartment and your chosen products, compare them to each other based on the representational issues you have already discussed (i.e. how does your representation of gender differ from the Apartment? Is it more progressive, or have you relied on the stereotypes?)

The Apartment centres around the protagonist (Baxter) who if we follow carefully enough it becomes apparent how miserable; broken he really is. Baxter allows for individuals to take advantage of him and in reality, has no true friendships. The driving factor for his melancholic lifestyle is his inability to say "no" despite the consequences. Baxter’s coping mechanism is to lose himself in his work just to numb the emotional turmoil he faces. Within his world everything appears to be a contradiction as exhibited with tone, genre and minute character details, allowing for the film to be more realistic. Baxter’s absence for a sense of direction in life other than paying bills, working; sleeping has this routine mannerism to it building to his lack of personal freedom.

This is homogenous to (Mother-figure’s) representation of a teen’s life being in havoc due to depression. Issues surrounding suicide in The Apartment are also touched upon. Baxter discloses that in a moment of desperation he attempted to kill himself but failed, instead shooting himself in the knee. Overall, the representation of mental health within The Apartment isn’t an over-dramatic drama congregated around someone who is a "psycho" in a mental ward or a comedic approach to make fun out of mental illness. Instead, the film is about sad directionless individuals who carry out simplistic routines in an imperfect society. All of this depth of their depression is sugar coated with enthusiastic speech; a smile. The way (Mother-Figure) represents mental health is similar to The Apartment, in the sense that we use the everyday routine to put forwards the hurdles that my protagonist faces. Although the film is not long enough to fully present my protagonist backstory or how she interacts with the society around her- it still manages to briefly cover mental health in a way that differs from stereotypical outbursts or dramatic violent acts which is perpetuated in the media. Therefore, I will argue that the film is progressive, but I also acknowledge that The Apartment was also progressive for the time period it was set in (1960’s). Still, this doesn’t hide the fact that in terms of other representation such as gender it misses the mark to demonstrate women as people rather than objects who are manipulated for the pleasure of men- yet I still find its representation around the topic of mental health neoteric.

In conclusion I think we fulfilled the task as well as possible for the time and resources that we had available to us. From my point of view there is definitely room for improvement in terms of the composition of the film such as the way the narrative is told. I find that the voice over script could have been altered to better explain the story, or more improvements to the visual aspects that are shown. This could have been done by incorporating cuts to different locations whilst the protagonist was carrying out her morning routine, to create a more captivating video. In addition to this the final edit of the clips in Premiere Pro should have been better labelled for a more organised workspace whereby I know what each clip is. If I could access Premiere Pro I would have made further enhancement to colour within the Lumeric colour panel. I think to give the film more of a cinematic effect I would play more with the contrast and ways to address the “mood” through colour. Not to mention a lining the clips timings better with the voice over or even on queue with objects (such as the flicker of the kettle once boiled).
