who am I ?

I'm someone who has always had a passion for Media from a very young age and would like to be apart of the media industry in the future. When I was younger my family used to travel a lot; my mum took us to museums and numerous attractions that continued to expand my knowledge. During this time I would continuously make mini blogs on my mum's phone, and even act like a journalist in front of the camera.

As I grew older I started up a YouTube channel as a way of showcasing my cover songs and building up confidence. I truly fell in love with films and tv as well as other aspects that are all involved in Media, therefore I decided that picking Media as a GCSE option was the best route for me.

In the 2 year course I began to enjoy the directing side of film making as well as creating long and detailed reports on a mix of genres in tv/film not to mention gaming. At the end of the course it was evident to me that my devotion and interest in media was still there, so we moved from London to Cambridge in order for me to come and study at the best collage which specializes in Media - Long road.

What are my interests ?

I have always liked to sing; create videos as well as keep active.

Four pillars

-Aperture

This refers to the size of the hole in the lens which is controlled by the camera body. An example to compare this to is thinking about the iris in your eyes, as the more "aperture" there is the more light gets through the lens.

In addition to this the more the aperture is wide open the shallower the depth of field will be - which basically means how much of your image is in focus. The smaller your aperture the sharper your image.

The stops of the aperture is measured in something called f stops, so the more open the aperture is the lower the f stop number would be.

-ISO

The ISO of the camera determines how much the camera digitally brightens the image. So the lower the ISO number the less digitally bright the image will be.

Essentially you can go up and down ISO stops- for example if I was to go from ISO 100 to ISO 200, then I've gone one full ISO stop up.

There are some negatives to increasing the ISO as, it also increases the digital noise of the image- meaning it creates a certain type of visual distortion.

-Shutter Speed

This is the speed at which the shutter of the camera closes. An example of this is if I was to go from a shutter speed of 1/30 of a second - 1/60 of a second then I've gone one full shutter speed stop up.

Furthermore shutter speed is the amount of time the camera sensor is exposed to light. We measure the stops in seconds and fractions of seconds.

-White Balance

It tells the camera how white appears to look in in the lighting condition provided and from there the camera works out what all the other colors look like.

Task 2

                             Video guide to Camera Movements
                                                                       Task 3
There are a variety of camera moments including Pan, Track, Tilt; Zoom.
These are just some ways in which films create different effects on the audience making the production more engaging.

Task 4

My Idea for the : Scenario planning/Shooting task

Two young boys are MEET up after a long time, and decide to go for a little football match with just the two of them. However on the way to the football pitch one of the boys stumbles over a small marble, which mysteriously brings him and his friend back in time.

The boys are perturbed; confused as soon as the marble takes them back in time. then yet again for a second time the marble slowly rolls towards them as they are standing in a long corridor.

The camera once again cuts, and the boys where a-bounce goes unexplained. Now in a crowded scene the audience gets a glimpse at another young girl's fate as she decides to pick up the mysterious marble just like the boys did. Then all of a sudden she disappears without a trace just like the two young boys.

Shot types -

1: over the shoulder shot (chopping and changing between first conversation)

2: close up (of the marble and then the shoes tripping over them)

3:  tilt upwards (the two boys looking at each other - the tilt is from a low angle)

4:  dolly in - around "where are we ?" moment

5: tracking shot (from low angle) of marble travelling (then fast cut to the boys standing)

6: birds eye view (and speedup clip of crowd moving)

7: zoom (inwards to hand picking up marble)- when the young has found the marble

Then end it there…

Props_

-1 marble

Rough Idea of dialogue:

{Script}

Using camera stabilizer to film shoes walking and then panning across as they come to a stop and meet with a second pair of shoes. Then camera clips to there faces and dialogue begins.

Meet up { going to a football pitch}

1: "oh hi"

2-"oh no surprise your late as usual" (in friendly way)

1: "should we make our way to the football pitch ?"

(friends walk there)

(stumbles across a small marble) and nearly trips

Then camera transitions to the 2 friends (camera drops down rapidly and characters jump - to make it look like they were transported)

2:"Where are we ?"

(find weird location in college)

1: "oh i know where we are - we are where i was 30 mins ago, it's like we went back in time or something."

(marble rolls towards them they both look at it (do close up on there faces in shock) then the camera transitions again)

-film a crowd moving around (Maybe include a time-laps)

The marble appears and another person finds it again ( they pick it up then (cut the camera) and they have disappeared.

Clothes-

-football kit, of any kind. Preferably plain with small logo of football team.

Duration of clip: 2-3 minuets

-Final idea made as a group-

Final Idea : Two young boys are meeting up after a long time, and decide to go for a little football match with just the two of them.

In the final shot there is a unknown man who appears with a snipper; a element of time is added in with the clock ticking in the background, almost like a bomb is about to go off.

My Role as : Director

The requirements of this role not only demands organisation and telling cast members, filming crew and everyone that's part of your team what it is that they need to do. But it requires you to be able to communicate with people in a way that they actually listen; feel a sense of importance, because everyone is entitled to feel and be valued.

As the director, I know its necessary that I take extra care during the pre-production phase, by understanding the budget for the film and drawing out a story board which would help to visualize the shots before putting them into practice. In addition I will work with the cinematographers while on set, to make sure the finished product is of high quality in the way that me and my team wanted it to be. Furthermore collaborating with the actors; having the music fit the scrip and gearing up the correct camera equipment to achieve desirable shots such as Birds Eye view and Tracking shots is also something I will take into account. Overall my role as a director would be to organsie myself in order to organise the whole production. I think by documenting; talking to my cast I will be able to be successful.

1)

Tracking shot

exterior/ grassland

Tracking the shoes as they move across

2)

Static shot

exterior/football pitch

The other person comes into frame but only there shoes are revealed

3)

Ped upwards

Exterior

The boys are doing a handshake, and the camera peds upwards to reveal their upper half.

4)

Tracking shot ( from behind)

Exterior

The boys are now walking together towards the football pitch.

5)

Tracking shot (from the side)

Exterior

Their dialogue still continues.

6)

(motivated) Close up

Exterior

Of the marble on the ground, and the boy tripping over it.

7)

Random movement

Exterior

The camera is handheld as it shakes, imitating an earthquake, as a leaf swoops over the lens of the camera to create a blackout.

8)

Random movement (continuation)

interior/hallway

Now the boys are transported to another location, the leaf swoops off the lens to reveal a new location that the boys have been transported to.

9)

Dutch tilt

interior/hallway

As the boys figure out what has just happened to them, the camera cuts. The camera now from the end of the hallway is at a canted angle to suggest a feeling of unease.

10)

Over the shoulder shot

exterior/ outside C bloke near the trees.

The camera now cuts to another location, with two people talking about the disappearance of the two young boys.

11) Dolly in

Dollying into the conversation, as well as exhibiting the Missing people poster in the background.

15. )Over the shoulder shot

at the window scene where the camera is over the shoulder of the subject who has the marble in their hand. The camera's main focus is on the mysterious guy on the other side of the window.

16.) Zoom in

on the mysterious guy with the snipper in his hands. (background sound of ticking) + (common sound for everytime someone disappeared)

-STORYBOARD-

 -Props, Clothes and Locations Sheet-

Location & props & Costume

Location:

Football pitch = Common but interesting place to meet up, great lighting as it's outside and lots of space to film/shoot.

C bloke corridor ( window scene) = Well lit as one side is from the outside and exhibits the sniper  inside when shot.

C block corridor ( dutch tilt shot from far away) = the lighting is quite mysterious and works well with the confused boys.

Outside C block classroom near the two trees ( for the conversation of disappearance) = shows people discussing the missing boys and then zooms out to the missing boys photo which creates suspense and mystery.

Costume:

(Girl) = Casual clothes- jeans and a jumper due to harsh weather conditions. The clothing should be plain with small logos, symbols etc. Shoes can be of any color.

(Boy 2) = Football kit

(Boy 1) = Sports clothes

(Sniper) = Black tracksuit (hood up) and mask.

Football clothing= Football clothing shows the boys were about to play football before tripping up on the marble.

Mask = Hide the face of the sniper along with black hood. Disguises the man from anyone. The mask helps hide his identity.

Clothing for the two people talking of disappearance = Should not be bold clothing because it takes way from the main purpose of the shot, which is to portray the poster in the background.

- jumper plain

-jeans/joggers of any color

Props:

Marble (strange time warping marble)

Tripod (rifle)

 Shot - 6

 Prop needed - Marble

Location - Football pitch

Person responsible  - Tevana

Shot -15-16

Prop needed -Tripod (sniper)

-Editing effects-

the effect I have chosen to include is ... strobe effect.

The way in which i will achieve this on adobe premiere pro is...

1- drag desired clip onto the timeline.

2- go to the right hand side of the page and open up the "effects" panel, then open the  "video effects" folder; you should find it under the  "stylize" folder.

3- its called "strobe light".

4-now drag this effect to the clip.

5-furthermore if you wish you can play around with the effects such as - "strobe color" can make it flash for however long you set the duration for. In addition to this you can press on "blend with original" to change how strong the color appears. Moreover "strobe operator" has options to darken color or have it flash.

If you wanted to speed up the pace of how frequent the flicker is try doubling the "strobe period" from the "strobe duration". You can also use these options to help transition to another clip with this flickering effect.

Also - if i needed some "stabilization" for shaky footage i can = go to effects, then search for "warp stabilizer vfx" and then drop it down to the clip.

-Edit Decision List-

-Final product-

"Marble" is the name that we collectively chose as a group.

             - "MARBLE"-
  ( RE-EDITED VERSION)

-Evaluation-

The plan:

Our brief was to complete a scenario given to us, which outlined that friends met up for an overdue reunion; stumble across a mysterious object which in our case was the mystical marble that could transport people back in time. Furthermore our task came with a list of instructions , such as having a wide range of appropriate shots and camera movements. This instantly got me pondering about incorporating shots such as Dolly zooms, tracking shots, birds eye view shots and maybe even combining them together in a effective manner in order to have a professional and engaging final product.

In order to prepare the first thing i did was write out my idea onto my blog which organized my thoughts all into one section allowing me to make precise and well thought out decisions. In addition to this i also typed up what shots i roughly want to include and where i wanted to place them. Furthermore i then began the processes of acknowledging what props, clothes and even the duration of the whole product. not to mention a script for the dialogue of my characters which i wasn't to sure whether or not i was going to include.

Overall i would say that i understood the instructions; that me and my team collaborated well together. As we discussed each of our individual my initial plan was to combined all of these ideas together however upon discussion with the group i noticed that some elements did not quite fit and that sometimes less is more.

Therefore we agreed that my idea along with Harry's idea where going to be merged together as a pose to having all 4 ideas.

The way we decided who was going to take what role as cinematographer, director and actors was though a group vote, where we put forward our interest.

The practical aspect:

The skills that i needed to demonstrate was being organised and collaborative, as well as being able to be a director which is open to trying new things; taking criticism.

Taking criticism was  extremely beneficial because it meant that as a team we were comfortable with each other to speak out and put forward our own opinions. However along the way we also faced some difficulties, such as the cinematographer (Harry) not being able to shoot in certain locations due to the lighting or the dialogue being cut out of clips. Not to mention whilst filming in the (C block) corridors individuals where passing though which delayed the amount of time we had to film.

In order to successfully complete the task i had to use Adobe Premier Pro to edit our final clips which was a new software that i was still learning to navigate.

together with being the person responsible for sharing out our footage via email or google drive, i was at first having trouble with getting the rest of my team members to access the footage so that they themselves can edit.

Some key skills that iv'e developed with using adobe is how  "rendering" my work is essential in order for my footage not to appear slowed down thus looking unprofessional due to the system not saving my work, which consequently leads to it crashing. To add onto this i also learned shortcuts with using the keys on my keyboard such as using the "v" key to select something. This allowed me to further use  tools and save time. My final point i wanted to highlight was my experimentation with graphics and the way that text can be altered to give a glowing effect, as well as uploading audio to my footage.

Review:

To conclude if i was to alter something about the way i worked it would be paying closer attention to the way in which certain shots can be confusing to the audience; the value of having shots fit the story line accordingly. Reflecting on this i did mange to still complete all aspects of the task and found enjoyment in directing my group.

One thing i found aggravating about the work was working out how to use  the Adobe software as its something new to me that i still haven't fully got a grasp on. But with this being said i did carry out additional research and stayed back longer in order to better understand how to use the software.

-After Effects -
Blob character

The white bold font slightly leans to the side (using the Italic feature);stands out in collation to the rest of the text. This could be because the movie title is well known to  the audience and can give them a sense of trust that this film will also be of high quality.

The word “Nightmare” instantly demonstrates this film as a horrific dreamy like story where the protagonist is stuck inside her mind. This makes a compelling storyline.

The black background ties in with the idea of the unknown; fear which is stereotypical for the horror genre.

-Film poster analysis-

The protagonists split face might indicate a split personality. Furthermore the face underneath has bold facial expressions such as wide eyes and clenched teeth, indicating that she may be dangerous or untrustworthy.

Horror films are meant to leave the audience on the edge of their seats, and here the use of showing part of her eye through the mask  gives the impression that the protagonists eyes are lurking everywhere.

Here the use of primary colours catches your eyes; by juxtaposing yellow and red it further draws your attention.

Even the clothes she is wearing is suffocating and uptight with the buttons being done all the way to the top.

The gradient of the black blending in with the clothes and face of the actress also fits with this creepy unwelcoming feel. Moreover the cinematography here chooses to use a brighter light to shine over the protagonist face, which highlights her daunting features and bold eyes.

The credits are thin and small as they are less valuable to the audience. This then gives room for the rest of the features in the poster to shine.

There is only one individual portrayed on the poster however the title “Us” again exhibits that the protagonist is two different people. To add onto this the font used for the movie title stands out in comparison to the rest of the different fonts used on the poster.

-evaluation-

Our task was to create our own version of a poster. We needed to  consider positioning, characters, rule of thirds etc.

In order to prepare for this task I used (Hip Clipart); created a collage of different images which i could use to incorporate in my poster.

I knew that i wanted to go for the genre action; that the majority of the images i use in the poster would be silhouettes of key objects that link to the film itself. For example in the movie i chose which was the first "Karate Kid" released, one important aspect i added was the Bonsai tree as it closely connects to the storyline reflecting inner peace being symbolic for what karate should be.

A difficulty that i faced was learning to blend images which had no transparent background and making it fit into my poster without looking out of place.

Another big obstacle was understanding how to layout different elements such as the title, credits and more.

However a new skill that i gained with the software photoshop was using multiple tabs at the top and dropping in a range of images all into one project, allowing me to have access to a variety of images from goggle; even Hip Clipart.

If i could change one thing about the way i worked it would be gathering more knowledge beforehand about how film posters are structured, as i feel this would of given me a more professional; accurate depiction of a film poster.

To sum up i believe i have successfully completed all aspects of the task to the best of my ability. I have really enjoyed immersing myself into film posters because it was a topic that a knew quite little about in terms of layout and rules.
